Hi.

I’m an anxiety-riddled, grass-eating cat mom happily engaged to a transgender man.

I work as an engineer in New York City, pretending to be an adult and spending a solid 20% of my time trying to remember to not reply all.

I wanted a platform to share my wealth of equally positive and negative experiences as I attempt to navigate my twenties, and maybe get a little preachy here and there about veganism, mental health and LGBT rights.

At the very least, I hope to make you laugh.

My Favorite Vegan Meals at 20 Popular Restaurants


The first time I attempted to go out to eat at a restaurant since becoming vegan was in Cape Cod, MA on vacation with my fiancé; I attempted to order about 8 different menu items, each one receiving a response similar to, "I'm sorry, but we cook that in butter." My final effort involved me asking for a packet on instant oatmeal and access to a microwave. Even that was unsuccessful (not to mention embarrassing) and the endeavor ended with me sobbing in the passenger seat of Jesse's Acura, screaming things like "ALL I WANT TO DO IS HELP COWS NOT DIE AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS."

Fortunately, I have learned quite a lot over the past year from the internet, my fantastic vegan friends, and my own experiences. On the downside, I have discovered that a ton of restaurants cook literally EVERY menu item in slabs of butter. But on a positive note, I have also found hundreds of vegan menu options at all of my favorite restaurants (both chains and local eateries!) 

To help all of my newbie vegans, and to hopefully shed some positive light for anyone who is contemplating their potential vegan future, I've put together a list of my favorite vegan meals at 20 popular restaurants across the country (and probably the world...) Don't worry, I didn't just include dinner - I even have options for your 3am-no-bra-winter-coat-booty-shorts-and-uggs-mid-period-severe-hangry-out-of-wine-need-either-dessert-or-tacos run. You're welcome.

1. Dunkin' Donuts

Medium Cold Brew Coffee with Almond Milk + Hash Browns (175 Calories)

2. Bob Evans

Grits (cup) + Seasonal Fresh Fruit (290 Calories)

3. Starbucks

Tall Café Latte with Almond Milk + Multigrain bagel (430 Calories)

4. Taco Bell

Crunchwrap Supreme (minus beef, sour cream & nacho cheese, plus black beans and guac!) (490 Calories)

5. Brueggers

Rosemary Olive Oil Bagel (330 Calories)

 

Lunch/Dinner - Fast Food/Fast Casual

6. Chipotle

Burrito Bowl with Sofritas (obsessed), Brown Rice, Black Beans, Fresh Tomato Salsa, Lettuce, Guacamole (750 Calories - worth it)

7. White Castle

Two California Veggie Sliders (300 Calories)

8. Subway

Salad with Lettuce, Spinach, Tomato, Cucumber, Green Pepper, Banana Peppers, Onion, Avocado, and Olive Oil Blend (140 Calories)

9. Panera Bread

Mediterranean Sandwich (minus feta cheese!) (380 Calories)

10. Dominos Pizza

Medium Thin Crust Pizza with Robust Inspired Tomato Sauce (their normal sauce), Spinach, Mushrooms, Green Peppers and Diced Tomatoes (140 Calories Per Slice - 4 Slices Total)

11. Au Bon Pain

Medium Vegetarian Chili + Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar Potato Chips (440 Calories) 

 

Lunch/Dinner - Sit Down Dining

Veggie Burger on a White Bun with Fresh Avocado (505 Calories)

Farmers Quinoa Patty on a Sprout Bun with Spinach, Dill Pickles, and Stone Mustard (400 Calories)

Stir-Fried Eggplant + Small Chili Garlic Green Beans (550 Calories)

16. Olive Garden

Cavatappi Pasta with Kids Tomato Sauce (yes, kids sauce is the only vegan option), a Breadstick (YES THEY ARE VEGAN, HALLELUJAH), and Steamed Broccoli (670 Calories)

17. Salad Bar

If you're at a restaurant that has NO vegan options (unfortunately, this is not a rare situation), you could be saved if they have a salad bar! Or if they can put together a DIY on the fly kind of salad for you. Salad bars have been life savers for me many a time <3

18. Sushi

I wanted to cover an entire cuisine with this one - there are a TON of Japanese, fusion, buffet, etc. restaurants that offer sushi, and almost all of them serve at least one type of roll that passes as vegan! I usually opt for the avocado rolls (because duh) but there are several other sushi roll contents that are vegan as well; some include cucumber, sweet potato, carrot, zucchini, etc. Sometimes if you ask, they can make one special for you.
